Thamesmead Information

Much of Thamesmead was intially built by the Greater London Council, for rent to families moving from overcrowded back to back Victorian housing in inner London.  Modern day Thamesmead is split into three areas, Central Thamesmead, North Thamesmead and West Thamesmead.  Features to note are a retail park, together with a shopping parade and leisure centre, library, gymnastics centre, a nine hole golf course and driving range, Birchmere fishing lake and Southmere Lake Boating Centre.  Southmere Lake was used as a setting for the Stanley Kubrick film 'A Clockwork Orange', and TV drama 'Misfits' was also filmed in Thamesmead.  It is also one of the starting points of the famous Green Chain Walk, which links it to places such as Chislehurst and Crystal Palace.

Property in Central Thamesmead is mainly 1980's built red brick estates and town houses.  North Thamesmead is mainly 1970's properties and West Thamesmead is the most modern part, being home to properties built in the 1990's onwards, and a majority of the properties are near the River Thames.

Although Thamesmead does not have it's own railway station, it does have an excellent bus route system, and is also very close to Plumstead and Woolwich stations (please see local information pages for Plumstead and Woolwich for approximately journey times).
