Lewisham - local information

The Area

Lewisham is just 5.9 miles south east of Charing Cross.  Lewisham lies south of Greenwich and just down the hill from Blackheath.  Mentioned in the Doomsday book as a large village, which is how it remained until the railways were constructed in the 1840's.  The construction of which transformed the area into the commuter suburb, which it still is today.  Lewisham today is a lively and bustling area.  There is a popular shopping precinct in the centre of town and a weekly street market along the high street. The area has received a boost in recent years with the Lewisham gateway project, a development of luxury flats close to the station, along with a new leisure centre. Other modern, residential developments include Silkworks and the Renaissance Project.  The main draw to the area is still the fast access to central London, literally the overground services that run to this popular zone 2 area are far better than other parts of London, served by the underground.

Lewisham is a major local transport hub, lying on the A20 road towards Dover and at the start of A21 to Hastings, with its own large bus station, railway station and the southern terminus of the Docklands Light Railway. London Underground lines run into the north of the borough at New Cross station and New Cross Gate station as part of the East London Line.

Mainly gorgeous small and very large Victorian houses, with a great deal of character.  Interspersed with some 1930's houses and the odd small modern developments.  If you are looking for something with character and period features, then in Lewisham and the Lewisham Borough you are sure to find a 'gem'.
